I think that's probably right. A smart person once said a Republican can't enjoy a good steak unless he knows someone somewhere is starving to death. So much of the Trumper mindset involves triumphing over (or trumping) the libs and their awful agenda; how will they know they're doing well unless they witness liberal suffering? They need the friction of diametrical differences to feed their outrage machine.

Of course, they're generally not very introspective folks so they may not know this 'til it's too late.
